Just wondering about this. It seems like a dream job for graphic designers, and I'm sure there are a few in here. If you've done any, what kinds and did you have any specific challenges in doing so?

Re: Anyone here do poster design?
Sat, September 11, 2004 - 1:27 AMI make rock posters for a living. The entire undertaking was challenging. I started making digital offset posters and did those for about a year, then decided that I had to learn how to screenprint if I wanted to compete in the current market. I took a semester at the college by my house and luckily there was a guy in the class that had been making posters for years. He really pushed me ahead of the game. Within a couple of weeks I was already printing on an auto press and by the end of the semester I had purchased my own. Now I do everything out of my house.
I do everything from start to finish and it takes me about to weeks to complete one poster. It is everything that I have ever wanted in a job. If you are interested in more info you are welcome to email me and I will answer any questions that I can. -

Ok. what do i need to do to start the process....
I used to create silk screen designs for a silk screen printer i wish i had gotten more into the printing end of it all. Hang Ten, and OP shirts. It was fun.

Re: Anyone here do poster design?
Wed, January 10, 2007 - 1:39 PMit depends on what you want to do. You could simply honing your abilities in Silk Screening or you could go digital. For that I'd suggest learning about Photoshop, Illustrator, and a page layout program like InDesign or Quark. Other then that I'd say take a good long look as much advertising art as you can get your hands on and start figuring out what you like and what you don't. Paying special attention to things like readability. Since most people will not be spending a lot of time standing and staring at your poster, how do you get your message across in the one to three seconds the average person is going to be spending looking at your image. Of course, if the target market are people putting your poster up in their room, then the name of the game is simple aesthetics.

Re: Anyone here do poster design?
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 8:55 AMI do some poster designs, mostly retail POS type stuff. Hopefully someday I can move into the rock poster area of the field, but for now I'm content. I think to make it in the "rock poster" area of the field you really have to start your own thing... just my two cents. Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone here do poster design?
Thu, May 19, 2005 - 1:58 AMjust posted 2 of my poster designd (modern bachanalia and WHITE). The first challenge of course is that this car culture we live in does not afford the format too often (gives way to billboards which are corporate driven).
2_The secundary chalenges are technical... for a couple of posters I had to literally find the printers who do the AAA maps to print a large scale poster for a gallery who wanted a map reference in the design. Rather than printing literally a 'map', I found the resorces that maps are printed on and designed the poster for Alexis' Rockman's "TAR FROM THE PITS AT LA BREA", for his art exhibition. This printer became a good collaborator for further map designs which I wanted to print in sizes over 59" tall.
3_The third challenge was the size of the film. There is only one place in LA that will output litho film that size and they predominantly cater to P.O.P. printing and film industry poster printing.
4_ The fourth challenge is a funny one. I could not find a printer in The whole county of LA who would print the "Modern Bachanalia" poster cause of the black and white image in the background showed and male erection with the goat. So finally some print brocker suggested a printer in south-central LA who did good quality printing for the porn industry... so, we found our solution... for arvertising of the event, however, the client asked that I modify the design (as shown in my post here in this tribe album) so the male fixture be covered by the model's head... oh well, so the actual posters showing the tool are now collectibles ;-)
cheers.

Re: Anyone here do poster design?
Fri, May 20, 2005 - 10:24 AMHey there! I do entertainment advertising. I make film and television show posters and ads. It has to be the most enjoyable job I ever had. It can be very tough to come up with the most successful concept and execute it just as u imagined it in the first place. Even though the process can be frustrating, it turns out to be fun and rewarding -most of the time :)

Wed, September 20, 2006 - 1:39 PMAnd just to clarify, there ARE some great jobs to score. Working for yourself in any freelance situ is going to be good in some respects and lousy in others.
Just sayin'
